Our Quest for Life-Long Health and Fitness

When we got married in 2003, I weighed 242 lbs, and Brad weighed 218. A huge part of our marriage has been dedicated to developing a healthy lifestyle. I currently weigh 193 lbs, and I would like to lose 43 lbs to reach my goal weight of 150. Brad weighs 198.5, and he would like to lose 23.5 lbs to reach his goal weight of 175. We are interested in this contest because The Biggest Loser aims to teach and inspire the same things we have aimed to acheive in our lives. It is our ultimate goal to live long, healthy lives as fit individuals. We think we should win because what you see on this site is not merely fabricated as a means to win a prize, but it is a true representation of how we live and have been living. We will lose weight by eating 5-6 healthy and balanced meals each day, and by working out at our gym 5-6 days each week. We will stay motivated by celebrating daily successes together. Together we can not fail because we are a true team in every sense of the word.

Where have we been?

I can't believe that it's been WEEKS since we've blogged anything here!  We're continuting to live LIFE.. eating really well and working out really hard.  Brad is running almost every day!  We need to update our "scale", but I've lost 12 lbs and Brad has lost 10.5.  YAY US!

Off and running

On your mark, set, 26:51 and 3.1 miles (5k) later, the finish line.

My (Brad) first race in 8 months and a personal victory on many levels.  The last race I ran was not my best performance, I ended up walking a great deal on the second half of the race.  I was out of shape, and didn't run again for nearly 5 months.

In the last couple of weeks, I have run , both on a treadmill and outside, at least 3 times a week, including a personal best full hour 6.25 miles on the treadmill.  My next race is on March 15th and I'm looking forward to it.

Run for Life

Brad and I *really* want to be good runners, and we've casually entered several 5K races over the past few years.  Well, tonight Brad ran his first 10K (not race, on a treadmill), and I am SO proud of him.  We are running another 5K race in a couple of weeks, and then another, and then in April, Brad may attempt a 1/2 marathon!

On the "progress" note, our weight is pretty much holding steady, which is why we haven't updated it, but we are working hard, and fully expect to see those numbers drop soon!

Off your"diet"??

Yesterday, we celebrated my dad's 69th birthday and my brother had the whole family over for a dinner party.  These events in my family are always interesting as the same themes and questions keep popping up over the years.  "Are you guys still going to the gym?"  "Did you go today/Are you going afterwards?"  "How much have you lost?"  And both Sarah’s and mine personal favorite after we decide we are going to have some cake... "So, are you off your diet?"

Now, for the record, last night I (Brad) decided to indulge, while Sarah decided against it.  Personal choices on both sides.  But, it's funny how people think "Oh, a piece of cake!!!  Are you sure you should be eating that??" (I sometimes think it gives people some sense of superiority. Some of you might disagree with me here, but I see nothing wrong with the occasional treat of dessert (key word being occasional)  I am not saying to go out and order a dessert as big as your head here.  I'm not saying to have dessert all the time. And I'm not saying have the three-course meal with greasy food then have the dessert.  As Clint Eastwood would say "A man's got to know his limitations."

The point I'm trying to make is one dessert does not a lifestyle break.

Keeping On.. my 2 cents worth

Yesterday, Brad posted about perserverance.. the trials and tribulations of the ups-and-downs with the scale and the dreaded plateaus.  I think it's so important for us to remember several things during our weight-loss journeys:

1.  How much weight do you have to lose?  This is not the same as how much do you "want" to lose.  Not all of us start our journey over 300 lbs like many of the Biggest Loser contestants.  Therefore, our numbers are not going to be as big each week.  Remember how Dr. Jeff and Eric were contstantly pulling out double digit losses every week?  Well they also each tipped the scales at close to or over 400 lbs in the beginning!  My husband, Brad, however, is already in a healthy weight range for a man his height and age.  He's 6' tall and weighs 194 lbs.  Due to his bone structure, though (tall and slender build), he can go to the lower end of his range (175 is his goal).  With only 19 lbs to get to the lowest end of a healthy weight range for his height, he's going to have to fight for every pound!

2.  How much time are you putting into your program?  Please remember that the Biggest Loser contestants are working out for HOURS every day.  (I don't know for a fact, but I assume they give their bodies ONE day to rest each week based on conventional ideas about what's healthy for your body.)  They work out HARD with their personal trainers, and then most of them, it seems, do quite a bit of cardio on their own time each day as well.

And finally.. when you are losing patience with the scale... ask yourself this:

3.  What's more important?  Losing it quickly or losing it permanently?  Take it one day at a time.  One workout at a time.  One meal at a time.  If you're burning more calories than you're consuming, it's a scientific and mathematical certainty that it WILL happen.  Be patient.  Perservere.  It will be SO worth it.
