Keeping On.. my 2 cents worth

Yesterday, Brad posted about perserverance.. the trials and tribulations of the ups-and-downs with the scale and the dreaded plateaus.  I think it's so important for us to remember several things during our weight-loss journeys:

    1.  How much weight do you have to lose?  This is not the same as how much do you "want" to lose.  Not all of us start our journey over 300 lbs like many of the Biggest Loser contestants.  Therefore, our numbers are not going to be as big each week.  Remember how Dr. Jeff and Eric were contstantly pulling out double digit losses every week?  Well they also each tipped the scales at close to or over 400 lbs in the beginning!  My husband, Brad, however, is already in a healthy weight range for a man his height and age.  He's 6' tall and weighs 194 lbs.  Due to his bone structure, though (tall and slender build), he can go to the lower end of his range (175 is his goal).  With only 19 lbs to get to the lowest end of a healthy weight range for his height, he's going to have to fight for every pound!

    2.  How much time are you putting into your program?  Please remember that the Biggest Loser contestants are working out for HOURS every day.  (I don't know for a fact, but I assume they give their bodies ONE day to rest each week based on conventional ideas about what's healthy for your body.)  They work out HARD with their personal trainers, and then most of them, it seems, do quite a bit of cardio on their own time each day as well.

And finally.. when you are losing patience with the scale... ask yourself this:

    3.  What's more important?  Losing it quickly or losing it permanently?  Take it one day at a time.  One workout at a time.  One meal at a time.  If you're burning more calories than you're consuming, it's a scientific and mathematical certainty that it WILL happen.  Be patient.  Perservere.  It will be SO worth it.

Thank you all for your comments!  I agree.. it's an all-over picture when it comes to weight loss.. scale, measurements, body fat percentage, how your clothes fit.  I should have mentioned also to take pictures regularly because sometimes you can't see it in the mirror, but you can see it if you put your pics side-by-side!

Ditto to everyone I totally agree with the measurements too. It is hard to get to that mental state sometimes but I encourage everyone to take their measurements and when you are feeling discouraged take them again to see the results.

This was very very well said.  Great points all of them.  I would like to add one too, if i may.  I found that if you focus on the scale too much you could get very discouraged.  I recommend taking your measurements also...this a big key to staying focused and seeing results that may not show on the scale.  If you are weight training, you may lose a pound of fat, but gain a pound of muscle----which would make no differnce on the scale.  Those weight numbers can't tell fat from muscle.  But when you are taking your measurements every week, well you could be losing inches!!!!!  Good luck to both you on your journey!!!   Donna

I have been telling people that for three weeks!! I have been impressed by my 4 3 and 2 lbs per week losses, but others seem sad when they lose so slowly.  I would be happy if I turtled even, because at least that is not a gain!!!! lol

    Michelle here...

I'm so with you on this.  It's funny how many of us sit around, out of shape for years, and then suddenly burst into a diet and fitness program striving for quick results.  The number 1 question I get asked at weight watchers meetings is "how long did it take?".  It took a year for me to lose 45 pounds and I'm fine with this.  Heck, I'm thrilled with that.  Another year to lose the second 45 is okay too as long as I'm making permanent changes and the weight stays off.
